Day 2 Heddon-on-the-wall to Vindovala Roman fort

This was a long days hike of 19 miles with an elevation gain of 2385 feet.
There was a noticable transition from farmland and grass-covered ramparts and ditches, to open countryside and wall remains.

The route passed numerous English Heritage sites at
- Rudchester
- Vallum farm
- Halton Chester Roman fort
- Brunton
- Chester's Bridge
- Black carts
- Brocoltia Roman fort

From Chollerford we saw more open stretches of intact wall, these are quite impressive and give a better feel for what it would have looked like originally.

The open countryside brought more random weather and we spent much of the day playing a type of waterproof hokey cokey (one leg in, one leg out, in, out, in, out...) While the weather decided if it wanted to be sunny or rain. In the end it chose rain and lots of it; not dissimilar to Dartmoor on a good day.

The national trail has a passport you can stamp at strategic points, there were two today at the Robin Hood Inn and Chester's.

There were also plantations of confers and broadleaves, which made a nice change to the scenery. There was a fair amount of sheep and cow whispering too, as I negotiated my way across the fields.

We met more walkers today, but as it was harder conditions no one hung around too long apart from in the pub at The Errington Arms. There was more discussion of itineraries and more sucking in of breath as we said we were doing the trip in 5 days.
My legs are already telling me that it is hard going but it's not impossibly difficult.

I managed to reduce the weight of my pack slightly by selflessly scoffing some snacks aad cake. I know what a hero 😉

It's less miles and elevation tomorrow but the forecast isn't that good and it is pretty exposed. I can now tell the weather by hairometer - it was pretty high today.

Distance: 18.7 miles in 7 hours (moving time)

Accommodation: Carraw B&B Military Road, Walwick NE46 4DB (Taxis v expensive here!)
