Newcastle

The journey to Newcastle from Weymouth via Carlisle was about 360 miles hampered slightly by the closure of the M6.
12 hours after we started we rolled into the Travelodge at the quayside near to the Gateshead Millennium bridge.

We had dropped the car in Carlisle with my cousin Angie and caught the cross-country train to Newcastle.

This is a great way to see the countryside we will be hiking; meandering through remote villages and pasture.

The railway follows the banks of the river Tyne, which in parts is shallow enough for  fisherman to wade in to cast their lines. It gradually widens as you approach Newcastle.

The quayside of Newcastle is an eclectic mix of traditional and modern styles; it is vibrant and energetic and a great opportunity for a night out.
I'd never been to Newcastle before and really didn't know what it would be like. It was friendly and fun and a great spot for sitting by the Tyne having a chat and a drink, or having a walk down to look at the  numerous sculptures.

There was much excitement in the morning with a naked Geordie charging up and down the corridor outside my room. I'm not sure if this is a local custom? 😉 He was desperately trying to get into his room but whomever was inside was not relenting to his pleas.

Cruel to laugh but i did; which reminds me there is an eclipse of the moon this evening. 😉

Headed to the quayside for a great walkers breakfast. The pub was amazing value - £4 a pint and full English breakfast (with added avocado) for £3.40. I hasten to add I didn't have a pint for breakfast!

The bus to Wallsend stops about 150m from the Travelodge and took 30 minutes. It is a 2 minute walk to Segedunum and the start of the wall.

Segedunum, which means ‘Strong Fort’, was built to guard the eastern end of the Wall, and housed 600 Roman soldiers. It stood for almost 300 years as a symbol of Roman rule and a bastion against barbarian attack.
Today, Segedunum is once again a major site on Hadrian's Wall. It is the most excavated fort along the Wall with surviving foundations of many buildings and part of the Wall itself.
